How Westcliff High School's Solar PV System Prevented Fire Risks and Cut Energy Costs

Garland UK, a trusted provider of high quality building systems, approached Nimbus Solar, an approved and certified Solar PV installer, to design and install a 37.84 kWp Solar PV system at Westcliff High School for Boys in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex.

Objectives

  • Reduce Energy Costs: By generating electricity on-site, the school aimed to cut its energy bills and reduce its reliance on external power sources.
  • Environmental Sustainability: The project’s goal was to significantly lower CO2 emissions, aligning with broader sustainability efforts.
  • Ensure Safety: It was crucial to meet strict safety standards, particularly by preventing fire risks through the use of ArcBox enclosures.


Solar PV Selection

Nimbus Solar carefully designed the solar system to meet the school’s energy requirements. For optimal performance and safety, we selected the following components:

  • System Size: 37.84 kWp
  • PV Modules: We installed 88 SOLARWATT Classic 2.5 AM Glass/Foil PV modules, each with a capacity of 430W. These were mounted using a GSE in-roof flush system on the school’s slate-pitched roof.
  • Inverter: One Ginlong (Solis) S5-GC36K-LV inverter were chosen for efficient energy conversion.
  • Mounting System: GSE in-roof combines roof and solar panel into a sleek and cost-effective solution.
  • ArcBox Enclosures: We incorporated ArcBox enclosures to enhance safety by containing electrical arcs, reducing the risk of fires.
