From Hatfield to Cleckheaton: Toolbank Expands Its Solar Investment with Nimbus Solar

Client Overview

Nimbus Solar was selected to deliver an 88.2kW commercial solar PV installation for Toolbank’s distribution facility in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire.

Toolbank, a leading tool and hardware distributor and part of the Dormole Group, first partnered with Nimbus Solar following the successful completion of a commercial solar installation at one of their facilities in Hatfield. Having experienced the benefits of on-site renewable energy generation and Nimbus Solar’s professional project delivery, the business approached our team to design and install a second large-scale solar PV system for its Cleckheaton distribution centre.

The project was designed to reduce operational energy costs, improve sustainability performance and increase energy independence, while ensuring minimal disruption to the site’s day-to-day operations.

Client Requirements

Toolbank required a solar energy solution that would:

  • Significantly reduce electricity imported from the grid
  • Improve energy independence across the site
  • Lower operational energy costs and provide long-term savings
  • Reduce carbon emissions in line with sustainability objectives
  • Be delivered with minimal disruption to daily warehouse operations

The Solar PV System

To meet Toolbank’s requirements, the Nimbus Solar team designed and installed an 88.2kWp commercial rooftop solar PV system, carefully engineered to maximise energy production and return on investment.

  • 196 DAS Solar 450W Solar Panels: Premium high-efficiency modules providing a total installed capacity of 88.2kW, designed for long-term reliability and performance.

  • 2 x Solis S5-GC40K Three-Phase Inverters: Commercial-grade inverters delivering efficient power conversion and comprehensive system monitoring.

  • Minimal Operational Disruption: Due to Toolbank’s extended operating hours, the required electrical shutdown was carefully planned and completed between 6pm and 7pm, ensuring minimal impact on warehouse operations and staff.

  • Optimised System Design: The array was designed to maximise available roof space and solar yield while aligning generation with the site’s daytime energy consumption profile.

Solar System Outcome

The completed solar PV system provides Toolbank with a substantial source of clean, renewable energy while significantly reducing reliance on grid electricity.

  • Annual Energy Production: 75,779 kWh of renewable electricity
  • Consumption Offset: Approximately 90% of daytime energy demand supplied by solar generation
  • Energy Self-Sufficiency: 55.1% reduction in grid dependency
  • Annual Electricity Savings: Estimated savings of £14,503 per year
  • CO₂ Emissions Avoided: Approximately 19 tonnes annually
  • Long-Term Financial Benefit: Projected lifetime savings exceeding £500,000

Having already experienced the benefits of solar energy at their Hatfield facility, Toolbank’s investment in a second large-scale installation demonstrates their continued commitment to reducing energy costs, improving sustainability performance and increasing resilience against future energy price volatility.
